Jukebox The Ghost Everything Under the JUKEBOX THE GHOST DELIVERS AGAIN

Jukebox the Ghost’s new album Everything Under the Sun proves to be a fun-loving and dance-addicted album that’s so happy-go lucky it becomes hard to stop from bopping your head from left to right. This Washington D.C. based band comprises lead singer and pianist, Ben Thornewill, vocalist and guitarist, Tommy Siegel, and drummer Jesse Kristin.

The piano-rock band, which has famously toured with Ben Folds, Free Energy, and  Jenny Owen Youngs, has the allure of The Morning Benders, with the personality of Ben Folds. A little bit indie and a little bit pop, Jukebox the Ghost is a great band to dig into before the summer ends.

“Schizophrenia” is quite a name for a track where the band’s musical style is constantly all over the place. This track is no different than the sound it produces. The piano playing and vocals are all over the place in a feel-good kind of way.

“Carrying” has a beautiful, and upbeat introduction to the track: “When you were carrying a lot of weight upon your shoulders/Shrugging it off like it don’t even matter.” The “ohs” in the song carry a lot of weight for the success of the track.

Lead singer Thornewill can sing about any terrible event and make it sound like the most wonderful experience of his life. As the album goes on, it appears that other bands on tour have served as great influences on the band’s music. Jukebox the Ghost has the same electro-pop sound that Nightmare of You has on “My Name is Trouble.”

“The Stars” has a similar ethereal sound to it with Ben Folds’ positivity as a thematic element.  “The ghost of someone else’s dream,/ A forgotten god stopping by to serve at the scene,/ And the lights were complicated and so we all just prayed to the spirits above and below.”

“So Let Us Create”, one of the most outstanding tracks on the album, tones down the band’s constant danceable track and brings it back to a romantic point of view: “If your dreams are far too real/ let me in them then.” The song is what you would picture in a movie scene where a guy is professing his love to the girl of his affections.

“Summer Sun” is a nice contrast to all of the danceable tracks. It is a more relaxed and calm version of Jukebox the Ghost, which is a nice change from their first album Let Live and Let Ghosts. The band tends to passionately emphasize their vocals in a lower key. “Half Crazy” felt like it was created in Ben Folds’ style with simplistic rhythms and piano chords that were rays of sunshine.  It is quite refreshing to hear a band that has an insane amount of optimism with a happy California swagger.

Although I am a fan of the occasional ballad on an album, Jukebox the Ghost’s is mainly upbeat. I felt like I was listening to a Broadway musical at times, but I enjoyed it in the way that I enjoy Glee. At times it was a little too much happiness, like someone who smiles constantly. However, these guys are purely talented. The band is currently touring with Hooray for Earth and Via Audio.
