John Mark Nelson’s ‘Control’ Spins In Haunting Circles [Premiere]

Talented beyond his years, Minnesotan singer-songwriter John Mark Nelson has the ability to capture the subtlest moments in his moving, deceptively complex compositions. “Control”, a standout track from his 2015 album I’m Not Afraid, has received the music video treatment, and we’re excited to premiere the simply-shot, moving video directed by Dan Huiting.

The song, featuring soft-spoken male-female vocals, is a thrumming story of longing: “Maybe in another year / Maybe when tomorrow comes / Maybe in another hundred miles,” Nelson sings, as the camera swings in wild circles around him and his partner while they stare away from each other. The chiming guitars and steady bass bring to mind The Shins, and the simplicity of the video allows the gorgeous music to shine through and illuminate Nelson’s clear instrumentation and message. As the video progresses, the lights shift and the elements come into play as rain falls, until Nelson is plaintively soaked. This is the image he leaves us with, and one that sticks in your mind.
