My Leather, My Fur – Stepdad (Free Download / Buy)
This past December, we posted Stepdad’s first single, “Jungles”, off their debut EP, Ordinaire. I knew I liked the electro/uber-pop band’s tunes, but to what extent, I had no idea. I figured it was worth a followup post to confess my love for their irresistible debut.
It really is a guilty pleasure of mine. I’ll be the first to admit that Stepdad is about as poppy as indie can get. Their smooth vocals, dance floor beats, and bubbly melodies can best be likened to that of Cali band Hellogoodbye. And I’m not talking about the uke-wielding new version of Hellogoodbye either. Still, every song on this EP is freaking amazing. It’s been five months since we posted about them, and I still find myself turning on their album and listening to it on full blast all the way through. This is extremely rare for me.
Should I feel guilty for loving something so incredibly digestible, so lovable it’s sickening? Fuck no! Give Stepdad a shot. Ignore your condescending friends, and sing each and every word out loud while walking down the street in the bright sunshine.
News update from Stepdad-land as well. They just launched a successful Kickstarter campaign and will be recording their debut LP with none other than Chris Zane. Who is Chris Zane you ask? Well, he produced albums from Passion Pit, Mumford & Sons, Les Savy Fav, among others. They’re set to begin recording this May in New York City, so expect some Buzzsession action.
