They really do exist! Cassette tapes may not be making the resurgence that vinyl is, but there’s definitely a niche (albeit a small one) for the 90s artifact. For my friend’s birthday a couple months back, I sent her one such device, a Sony Walkman to be exact. With it, I sent some custom mix tapes as well as the new Tapes ‘n Tapes and Tennis cassettes.
I guess the point of getting a tape player is so you can go back and listen to the Ace of Base, Selena, and Frankie Valli tapes sitting on your shelf. Or maybe that’s just me? For those with a tape player searching for a great new listen, do yourself a favor a check out Brooklyn’s Phone Tag. Their electro pop melodies are catchy as can be, and are absolutely perfect for the coming sunshine of May.
Whether or not you’re into analog, you can get a free download of their EP, Look and Feel, via their BandCamp page. The 6 song release is stunning, but if I were to pick a single winner on the album, it would have to be “Look and Feel”. It’s a fun pop song with a funky beat, reverb-heavy falsetto vocals, and a bubbly electronic ambiance. Enjoy and make sure to pick up the cassette soon as it’s only on sale for 7 more days.
