Free The Pterodactyl 3 – Hot Club de Paris (Free Download / Buy)
Hot Club de Paris (@hotclubdeparis) kick-punched their way into my road trip rotation when I was a sophomore in college. My reputation for being an Anglophile motivated a friend to introduce me to Drop It ’til It Pops, Hot Club’s first LP, which I dug it instantly. “Clockwork Toy” and “I Swung for Judas” were two of the tightest punk songs I’d ever heard and I was enamored by the bands excellent harmonies and great song titles. I challenge you to find a better song title than ”Hello, I Wrote A Song For You Called ‘Welcome to the Jungle.’”
The trio from Liverpool recently released Free The Pterodactyl 3, an LP that celebrates the bands familiar bravado while displaying a noticeable maturation in songwriting. Although Drop It ’til It Pops had some gems, there were a few songs that straight up sucked. Free The Pterodactyl 3, on the other hand, is a commendably balanced effort.
Not only does ”Dog Tired At The Spring Dance Marathon” continue the trend of hilarious track names, it also completely rocks my face off. A viscous bass line combined with some of the best drumming I’ve heard in a coons age. The pristine three-part harmony blends seamlessly with a frenetic but silky riff. Combined, the separate parts Voltron this song into the fucking stratosphere.
“Biggie Smalls & The Ghetto Slams” sounds like R.E.M. (@remhq) in their prime, only with Ross Millard on the mic. If that doesn’t toot your horn, your horn isn’t worth tootin.’
It’s weird to see a band defined by their youthful energy mature, but it’s pretty fucking sweet when the end result is something as good as this.
