I think it’s time I cemented myself as The Wild Honey Pie’s resident electro-pop lover. Is it beat driven? Does it have electronic pulses and largely utilizes electric guitars and synthesizers? Can I dance to it? If the answers to these are affirmative, then guess what, I can almost guarantee that I’ll love the song. Simply put, if a dance track causes me to picture myself jumping up and down in a room filled with flashing green lights (yeah, just like J.Lo’s “Waiting for Tonight” video!) it will make me pretty happy. Still, I’m the first to admit that dance pop bands have one main problem: they are repetitive, and full-length albums have a tendency to drag and become dull.
Holy Ghost! (@holyghostnyc) has produced a series of spectacular singles and EPs, not to mention their reputation as first rate re-mixers, but that doesn’t mean that they can produce an LP that will hold a listeners attention through till the final song. With a scant 8 tracks, they somewhat skirt around this problem, but they still ride through the album on the strength of a handful of amazing songs, while a few others are there to kill time. Still, the amazing singles are enough to make up for the filler.
The album opener “Hold My Breath” is a great example of breezy electro-pop genius. It’s a song that immediately forces heads to bob and hips to sway, whether you are on the train or on a dance floor. “Jam for Jerry”, with twinkles reminiscent of Cut Copy and a criminally catchy chorus, will be spun on Indie-Dance nights in every bar from here to Paris, and “Slow Motion” has a groove that only inanimate objects could resist. Holy Ghost! knows how to get people on the floor, and this album offers up plenty of songs that will sound absolutely spectacular on any dance mix.
Not every dance pop and electro band can make a full-length album like Hot Chip, LCD Soundsystem and Cut Copy. Some are simply better off releasing EPs and singles, and in the world of dance music there is absolutely no shame in that. No DJ spins a whole record at any club, no matter how indie or avant guarde. Holy Ghost! has created an album that has it’s fair share of gems, and even those songs that don’t stand out of the pack are still solid singles. Regardless, perhaps they should just stick to making more of their killer EPs.
