I’m a sucker for sythns. I like all sythns: pop ones, dark ones, ones that belong in Flock of Seagulls. I especially love synths that follow the direct line from Joy Division and New Order- the ones with swirly tingling that give way to a deep murky rumbling below. Handsome Furs (@handsome_furs) traffic in the kind of ecstatic crunchiness I love so dearly.
The Bell House was filled to the brim when I saw them a while back, with tons of people coming to see the premier electro band. Everyone didn’t have long to wait before they came out in all their short dressed, white panted glory. Immediately, the husband-wife duo burst to life, setting the small stage on fire and casually joking with the crowd. Throughout the rather short set, the two never stopped moving, never stopped smiling and never stopped coaxing the audience to have even more fun. The best part of the show was the simple vivacity of the duo, the electric presence they emited.
Their reverb was light, making room for the melodic pop sound that makes Handsome Furs so strong. The booming vocals and driving drum beats on their recorded tracks are a perfect compliment to how energetic they actually are as performers.
Though their new album, Sound Kapital, doesn’t come out until June 28th, you can grab a download of the first single “What About Us” below! This record, written exclusively on keyboards, will be the third that the Canadian duo has released, and, as the band has said, will continue to to be forged of “life-affirming anthems”.
