Gordi’s dreamy, electronic new release, “Can We Work It Out”, is heavy on drumbeats and synth-washed guitar strums, mashing the best of folk, pop and electronica into a hazy, ethereal track. The Aussie native released “Can We Work It Out” as a follow-up to two other singles, the predominantly pop-folk “Nothing’s As It Seems” and the ballad “Taken Blame”, both of which appear alongside “Can We Work It Out” on her upcoming debut EP (whose title, Clever Disguise, appears in the lyrics of this latest release). “Can We Work It Out” has a much fuller sound than previous singles, balancing the minor tones and brief ear-pleasing harmonies that Haim and CHVRCHES often employ. The song still maintains Gordi’s slightly dissonant, raw voice and anguished lyrics, however. As she continues to establish her signature sound, which is simultaneously uplifting and melancholic, Gordi (née Sophie Payten) sets the stage for a hauntingly shimmering EP with this gorgeously tortured release.
