Numbers Don’t Lie – The MynabirdsNumbers Don’t Lie – The Mynabirds (Buy)
It seems to be a constant theme on the site in the past couple days that we’re covering bands that have formed after the dismantling of another band. Some times this is a bad thing, sometimes good, sometimes more of an indifferent experience. I’ve spent a few days listening to former Georgie James member, Laura Burhenn’s latest band, The Mynabirds, and I’ve in an incredibly good mood. In a hipster world that sees far too many influencers from the 80s new wave synth world, it’s refreshing to see a few bands drawing inspiration for early 60s music (She & Him, Lissie, Edward Sharpe, etc.).
Delightfully popy music is just so damn ‘in’ right now, and thank goodness for it. The Mynabirds are positively bubbly, and after releasing their debut LP in April, I’m glad to have finally exposed myself to them. The album, entitled What We Lose In the Fire We Gain In the Flood, is a taste of Dusty Springfield, but still accomplishes something original. The album was recorded during a retreat in rural Orgeon. Imagine laying down in a dandelion-covered field, finding shapes in the clouds, enjoying a slight breeze. That’s a hell of a lot nicer picture to paint than my current status, sitting inside my air conditioned room avoided the mid-90 degree heat of New York City. Enjoy the FREE music and find a field somewhere.
