Heart Full of Pentagons – Film School Heart Full of Pentagons – Film School
After stepping back from the grind for a couple of years, Film School has finally returned with their 4th LP entitled Fission, an album that proves this band is more than a blip on the musical radar.
Film School certainly knows how to adapt to change. Since they’ve begun their journey they’ve had their gear stolen, split up and lost their label. Due out August 31 via FFO Records, Fission is a piece of collaborative art that embodies the group’s new found clarity and renewed surge of energy. Some positive alterations made obvious on this album include the increased presence of bassist Lorelei Plotczyk’s vocals and the abundance of tracks penned by Plotczyk and keyboardist Jason Ruck.
The tracks range from electro-pop dance anthems like the first single When I’m Yours, whose swift beats promise the listener an album loaded with soaring melodies and ever-present keyboards, to true indie rock male/female duets like Waited.

Keeping up the diversity, Sunny Day contains dreamy vocals, tambourine jangles and a slew of heavily distorted guitar chords, giving off a British Pop circa the 90s feel. Think of it as that happy-go-lucky anthem that you often hear at the beginning of a movie before everything goes downhill. Following Sunny Day, Bones slows things down a bit with some mellow male vocals laced with the sound of string and a piano.
Closing out the album was my favorite track, Find You Out. It begins with upbeat, optimistic instrumentals leading into Plotczyk’s dreamy vocals asking not for an apology, but for an honest response. It’s the perfect closure to this collection of songs—not too mellow and no too upbeat. Find You Out leaves you with a lingering want to find out what’s next for Film School and whether or not the changes they’ve made will stand the test of time.
One thing is for certain; Film School has managed, thus far, to keep growing with time. With each album, they’re proving that they have earned their spot outside that of the one-hit wonder category that so many bands seem to fall into these days.
