Like any good girl who was raised on a steady diet of post-punk and electro music, I am a sucker for some staccato beats and electronic manipulation. The newest song worming its way into my conscious (and probably subconscious) using awesome unrelenting catchiness is “Big Things” by British band Fiction. It also has a suitably whimsical video.
Fiction is the type of band that sounds as though they decided to start playing music after they picked up Gang of Four for the first time, that is, equally influenced by pop, punk and art rock. The four piece from London starts with layered beats and blips, a barrage of noise, and adds a catchy melody to the mix. It’s the kind of melody that forces you to dance while still managing to make you feel smart at the same time. You know, post-punk.
They don’t have any albums out, but singles for “Big Things” and the equally great “Mars 500” are available on iTunes. According to an article from Clash Music, they are working on their first full-length album, which will hopefully be released this year. It doesn’t look like they are touring State side yet, but The Wild Honey Pie will definitely be there when they make their New York debut.
In the meantime, look at this great video for “Big Things” and get yourself dancing (hopefully like the guys in the video, cause that is some inspired damn dancing).
