WHY? IS COOL

If you’re a consistent tWhp reader, you probably know that I’m quite fond of Oakland band WHY?. There’s something so unique and infectious about lead singer, Yoni Wolf’s voice that makes it hard for me to get off this fix. He’s incredibly talented, and creates beautiful music that transcends genres (rap, rock, alternative, pop).

WHY? became who they are today back in 2005 when Wolf asked brother Josiah to join the band along with friends Matt Meldon (guitar) and Doug McDiarmid (random task member). With a band finally behind him, Wolf released Elephant Eyelash in 2005, Alopecia in 2008, and Eskimo Snow in 2009.

For more info on the band, check out their Wikipedia page, MySpace page, or website. Below are my picks for must-listen songs from each of their three albums released as a band (as opposed to Wolf’s former work as a solo project under the same moniker).

Elephant Eyelash (2005) – “Waterfalls” (my favorite song from this album), “Crushed Bones”, “Rubber Traits”, “Fall Saddles”, “Sand Dollars”, “Speech Bubbles”, “Light Leaves”

Alopecia (2008) – “The Vowels Pt. 2″ (favorite from this album), “Good Friday”, “The Hollows”, “Song Of The Sad Assasin”, “Fatalist Palmistry”, “A Sky For Shoeing Horses Under”, “By Torpoedo Or Crohn’s”

Eskimo Snow (2009) – “These Hands”, “January Twenty Something”, “Even The Good Wood Gone” (my favorite song by WHY?), “Into The Shadows Of My Embrace”, “Berkeley By Horseback”, “This Blackest Purse”

I hope after reading about this band you are overwhelmed by the urge to buy each and every one.
