Talk about a jack-of-all-trades. Mica Levi, aka Micachu, is a singer, songwriter, producer, composer, violinist, and violist. Oh, and did I mention she’s only 21? Yeah, this girl has some serious talent.
A product of the UK, Micachu is best known for her messy mop aka her hair, her experimentation with various genres, and unrefined beats. She likes to keep things raw, real, and as unusual as possible. Many of the instruments she uses in her live shows are made from common household objects such as a bottle or vacuum cleaner.
In addition to household objects, her live shows are accompanied by her band, the Shapes—a three piece set fronted by Micachu on vocals, guitar, electronics, and Hoover (yes, Hoover the vacuum); Raisa Kahn on keys; and Marc Pell on drums.
While a majority of her music done with the Shapes is pop, Micachu likes to mix it up with what some would consider poorly tuned instruments, distorted sound effects and unusual time signatures.
I’d like to say that I thoroughly enjoyed this bizarre take on music, but I feel like the real experience is seeing Micachu perform live. She’ll be spending this month touring the states before crossing over the big lake and heading home for some shows in London.
