For those who have never heard of Death Cab for Cutie, do not be turned off by their dark, melancholy band name. In fact, the lead singer of this Seattle-based band, Ben Gibbard, merely named the band after a song that can be heard in The Beatles‘ film, Magical Mystery Tour. Believe it or not, songs do not actually revolve around death or cabs! Now that I have convinced you to look past the name of the band, it is time to mention more important news. As I talked about in my post about Venice, I was able to meet the music supervisor of the upcoming Twilight film. I’ll give you one guess to who sings the film’s lead single. Yes! Death Cab for Cutie! The song, which has been out for quite a while now, is called “Meet Me on the Equinox”, and isn’t bad. While the song is not one of my favorites from them, it is definitely worth mentioning. Here’s the brand new music video for it.
Death Cab for Cutie isn’t just your run of the mill indie band. Yes, they are a bit more “emotional” than others, but that doesn’t make them emo. Ben Gibbard, their creator and lead singer, is a musical genius. His voice is both elegant and powerful. With every one of their six studio album releases, I believe they have gotten stronger. As far as live performances go, I have seen them twice, and have been blown away on both occasions. Absolutely amazing! I was particularly lucky to see them at two great venues, the McCarren Park Pool in Brooklyn and Red Rocks Amphitheater in Colorado.
It is really difficult to express my passion for Death Cab’s music. I associate so many distinct memories and relationships (cheesy, I know) with their songs. They truly are my favourite band. I have been listening to their music for quite some time as well. Yeah, maybe I wasn’t at the record store to pick up their first album when it came out. I admit it! I did, however, buy four of their six albums when they were first released (I have since bought their various EPs and early albums).
