GIVERS [INTERVIEW]

Shuffle Through The Wild Honey Pie

If you haven’t had a chance to check out up-and-coming Louisiana band, GIVERS, you’ve been missing out. They are a talented bunch of eccentric musicians with a knack for creating catchy and fun tunes. Below is an interview I conducted with them recently. For more info, you can check out their MySpace page (click here) or their website (click here) where they are offering their EP as a free download. Enjoy!

the WILD honey pie: Hey guys! I’m stoked to have you featured on my site! If you didn’t realize it already, I named my blog after a song by The Beatles. It’s a wacky song that creeps out some people, but I love it anyway. Got any favorite songs that are totally out there, but you love anyway?
GIVERS: Yeah ya know, the newer songs that we’ve created.. someone could consider them “out there” compared to our older material. There is one song on the album has a darker undertone that we enjoy exploring.

the WILD honey pie: I was driving my car today, blasting tunes, screaming the lyrics, when I looked over to the car next to me at a light. Obviously, they caught me in the act, and were laughing hysterically. Anything embarrassing happen to you recently? What’s the most embarrassing thing to happen to you?
GIVERS: Last show in Baton Rouge at this surrealist art and costume ball, the crowd was shouting for an encore. Kirby’s mom’s boyfriend, dressed as a sailor, saw it as an opportunity to jump on stage and begin hyping the crowd up. He continued this to the extent that they knocked over some of the PA speakers. He was then kicked off stage and we couldn’t play an encore due to the city’s sound ordinances…it was pretty hilarious.

the WILD honey pie: As a band that’s getting more attention from music blogs these days, you probably get a lot of comparisons to other bands? What’s the worst one you’ve heard? Any comparison you’ve heard that just pissed you off? What’s the most flattering one?
GIVERS: There have been people who thought we were a Christian praise band. We think that’s funny. When we’re at a show and people compare us to a band, in a way, it doesn’t really matter who they compare us to, but more so about the face they make when they make the comparison. We get a lot of comparisons which is normal for new bands but we are happy to say that most were given with smiles. One day we hope to be compared to Tool.

the WILD honey pie: Just got done watching the NFL Pro Bowl. You sports fans? What’re your favorite teams?
GIVERS: We are ALL about the [New Orleans] Saints. It is SO awesome to see an underdog team rise up.

the WILD honey pie: I’ve been listening to your music a lot recently. You’re truly gifted! Who have you been listening to lately that’s impressed you? Anyone in the media spotlight these days that you think is getting way too much attention?
GIVERS: Bon Iver, Dr. Dog, Beach House’s Teen Dream, and the new Animal Collective EP have all been on repeat in the van… and Tool’s Lateralus. Well, there are plenty of musicians we like who we also think should be getting a lot of attention… Adrian Orange is someone who Taylor feels would fall into that category.

the WILD honey pie: SXSW is less than two months away! What music festival’s your favorite? Which do you want to play to most? Are you appearing at any this year?
GIVERS: It’s exciting that we are getting into the festival circuit; we hope to explore that world to it’s fullest. So far, we are performing at Geronimo Music Festival, Foburg Festival, SXSW, Houston’s Free Press Festival and more to come soon.

the WILD honey pie: With music festivals come the nuts (including me) that go to them. What is the absolute strangest thing you’ve ever heard about happening at one of these things?
GIVERS: So far, we haven’t played that many festivals, however at the beginning of this tour, we played the Baton Rouge Art Gallery’s Surrealist Soiree’- between total power outage, speakers falling into the crowd, and everyone dressed as surrealist paintings.. we had an interesting experience… to say the least.

the WILD honey pie: I’ve heard of some funny pranks bands play on each other when they’re on the road. Done anything funny to each other?
GIVERS: We are extremely into pranking. Taylor is totally a compulsive prankster… because he sets the bar so high, the rest of us have to step up to even begin to compensate or compete with him. Pretty much, the whole tour – you better watch where you walk, check the corners before you turn, and be on your tippy-toes unless you like being shaken up. Taylor is oddly obsessed with themandus for example – will wait thirty minutes in a bush just for a scare. It takes some getting used to you can imagine. Ha!

the WILD honey pie: We’re going to need some pictures to post with this article, so why not make it fun. Maybe just goofy pictures of y’all on tour?
GIVERS: Here’s one of up from our day off on the road on the east coast!
 GIVERS [INTERVIEW]

the WILD honey pie: I don’t know about you, but I miss the MTV and Nickelodeon of the 90s. Nothing like Pop Up Videos, Beavis and Butthead, and Ren and Stimpy. What old show do you wish made a comeback? What do you think Beavis and Butthead would say about your music?
GIVERS: Tif and William used to be into The Raisonettes and the claymation movie features… Carebears? Taylor wants Kids Incorporated to come back, cause he only caught a few episodes and wishes Donkey Lips from Salute Your Shorts would have his own show. Josh would love for All That and Dexter’s Laboratory to make a comeback and Kirby would like to see Prometheus Bob. We would be surprised if [Beavis and Butthead] were into our music.

the WILD honey pie: I know you probably hate to play favorites, but where’s your favorite place to play a show? What makes that place so special?
GIVERS: The Spanish Moon in Baton Rouge is a place we love playing. The people, the sound, and the overall vibe of the room makes for an awesome show every time. The people there really support us and it was the place where we had our first big out-of-town show… we hold a special place in our hearts for them and the great people that work there.

the WILD honey pie: Thanks so much for answering our questions! Any
thing you want to shout out to your fans?
GIVERS: We would love to say thank you to all the people whom we’ve met on this tour- they have all been openly accepting and warm-hearted. Much appreciation.
