the WILD honey pie: Hey dude! Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions. I’m going to try and ask you stuff that you hopefully haven’t heard before. You’re in a relatively new band. What cocktail best represents your sound? Why?
Nate Ruess: Great question… unfortunately I usually only drink a vodka martini… and we aren’t that… in my answer we would be a modern drink with some classic ingredients that you would drink at a classy restaurant to help keep you relaxed while you pick up on older women.
the WILD honey pie: Who’s your biggest musical influence (from before the 1960s)?
Nate Ruess: My parents were born before the 60s… they’re easily my biggest influence in general.
the WILD honey pie: This site’s called the WILD honey pie. What’s your favorite song off of The Beatles’ White Album?
Nate Ruess: That would be my favorite Beatles (and maybe in general) song ever… Long Long Long.
the WILD honey pie: What’s your favorite song that most people hate?
Nate Ruess: Off the White Album? Wild Honey Pie. In life? Usually anything I play from one of my favorite all-time bands, Prefab Sprout. I usually adore people who do get it.
the WILD honey pie: If you absolutely couldn’t play a gig, who would you choose to do vocals instead?
Nate Ruess: Alive? Van Morrison. Dead? Otis Redding.
the WILD honey pie: What article of clothing from your childhood do you wish you still had?
Nate Ruess: My velcro shoes… once those were stripped of me I felt it was the end of innocence.
the WILD honey pie: Any movies you secretly love?
Nate Ruess: I have no shame regarding what movies I am fond of.
the WILD honey pie: Describe your ideal venue.
Nate Ruess: A large theatre from the early 1900s with good catering.
the WILD honey pie: You’re at a party that’s dying. What song do you put on, and what style dance do you do?
Nate Ruess: I would put on Number One Song in Heaven by Sparks… it would take people about 4 minutes to understand the song… but once they did I guess I would do some celebratory dance like Carlton does in Fresh Prince.
the WILD honey pie: One last question, worst and best musicians that made their debut this past year?
Nate Ruess: Hmmm… not sure about my favorite debut from last year… and I’d feel bad telling anyone they made a bad record last year… unless they were in Brokencyde or The Millionaires… then I would tell them their debut could potentially signal the end of mankind.
