the WILD honey pie: Hey guys! I can’t say enough good things about your past two albums, and the stuff I’ve heard so far off of your upcoming album, The Winter of Mixed Drinks. How does it feel having your second album finished and ready to release?
Frightened Rabbit: I’m slightly nervous, but I think we are all rather excited. We’ve had it done for about 6 months now, so you start to wonder whether or not it’s any good, but the initial rections seem positive. We can’t wait to play the new stuff on the next tour.
the WILD honey pie: You’re from Scotland, but recorded your second album in the States (Connecticut). I live right across the state border in New York, what do you think of my neck of the woods?
Frightened Rabbit: It’s beautiful up there. We’ve spent a lot of time in upstate New York and in Bridgeport and have seen it in all seasons. Lovely place to make a record!
the WILD honey pie: Pick up any American habits when you were here? What were your favorite American foods?
Frightened Rabbit: I always pick up a slight American twang when I’m out there, which annoys my girlfriend a lot. Adopting a slight accent makes it easier to order in restaurants. I like a bit of the good ol grilled American cheese. There is nothing nutricious in it at all. Perfect.
the WILD honey pie: When I was in London, I met two gorgeous girls from Edinburgh. I was getting along with one of them just fine, but when they got together I couldn’t understand a word they said (haha it was actually pretty funny). Are Americans ever hard to understand with all the slang we use?
Frightened Rabbit: Not really. I’ve watched enough episodes of The Wire to know some of the good stuff. I think there should be a Glaswegian version of that show. It would be fucking brutal.
the WILD honey pie: In college, I worked at a restaurant with a Scottish chef. He was a HUGE Celtic fan (I couldn’t even say the word Ranger around him). How about you guys? Celtic or Rangers? Got any trash to talk?
Frightened Rabbit: Neither. I certainly don’t get into the Celtic/Rangers nonsense. My brother and I are Hearts fans, but I never go to games. Apparently I’m an embarassment at football matches. Kick the ball!
the WILD honey pie: I recently got back from London where I interned at MTV. What was it like when you first saw one of your music videos played by them?
Frightened Rabbit: I haven’t actually seen it on the TV, but it’s a great landmark for any band, even though it’s not quite the station it once was.
the WILD honey pie: I’m pretty nostalgic for the MTV of the 90s. Any shows you wish you could bring back? (i.e. Beavis and Butthead, Daria, etc.)
Frightened Rabbit: We never had MTV in my house, but I would love to resurrect Saved By The Bell, Captain Z and the Zed Zone, Rosie and Jim, California Dreams, Hangin With Mr Cooper, etc.
the WILD honey pie: Theoretical scenario. If you could date any cartoon charter, which one would it be? What makes that character so great?
Frightened Rabbit: I’d happily go for drinks with Belle from Beauty and the Beast. She seems like she would make good bread. I mean that literally.
the WILD honey pie: It’s pretty clear that you put a lot of work into your music. What’s the toughest part about recording an album? What your favorite part of the process?
Frightened Rabbit: It’s hard to know when to stop, to finally say that something is finished- that’s the hardest part. I guess my favourite part is when we finally have a template down for a song and we can expand and contract it therein. Recording is my favourite aspect of being in this band.
the WILD honey pie: Scenario. You’re getting ready for a gig, but are ill and can’t perform. You get to choose ANY well-known person to take your spot for the night. Who do you pick?
Frightened Rabbit: Larry David.
the WILD honey pie: I know this is a strange question, but what’s your favorite cheese?
Frightened Rabbit: Aha! I can’t tell you how long I’ve been waiting for someone to ask. I’ll have to do a top 5, with a short summary of each…
1. Tomme de savoie: it smells like cheetos but is really subtle and a bit creamy. Good with strong ale.
2. Epoisse: my girlfriend’s favourite. Sooo salty but really good. Eat with grapes or sweet sweet onion chutney.
3: Buffalo Mozzarella: classic stuff but an amazing sandwich cheese. I could eat ball upon silky white ball.
4: Cornish Nettle Yarg: this guy gets a great flavour from being wrapped in nettle leaves. Better than it sounds!
5. Arran Cheddar: strong but not crazy, this producer from a small island in Scotland make a bunch of amazing flavoured cheeses too. Up ye!
the WILD honey pie: Thanks so much guys. This last question is for your lady fans out there. What’s your favorite “love-making” music?
Frightened Rabbit: The Twilight Sad. Haha. I hope they read this. They’ll spew down their trousers.
