Interview Audio – Fang Island Interview Audio – Fang Island

Drumroll, please.  Our next interview is with the fresh new band, Fang Island.  They’re a breath of fresh air in the indie music scene as they’re fusing standard indie pop with arena rock and psyche.  Great shit, and a funny group of guys to talk to.  For the complete interview, listen to the audio above, or just read the abbreviated transcribed version.

the WILD honey pie: What’s your guys’ favorite NY slice of pizza. If your music would be represented by a type of pizza which would it be?
Nick Sadler: I would say collectively the group really likes the place on [5th] Avenue in Park Slope called Luigi’s. It’s a little tiny place with what looks like some father and his kids making pizza all day. It was in the movie Big Daddy, the Adam Sandler movie. It’s right near our house, we always go there and get this really gnarly New York slice. The topping that represents Fang Island the most, the first thing that comes to mind would be like anchovies.

the WILD honey pie: Other than on stage, where do you sing the most (shower, car). Any songs that have been stuck indoor head recently?
Nick Sadler: The most I sing is in this little studio that we have i the apartment we live in. I’ve been down there a lot singing. Lately I’ve been very into kirtanas. I go to yoga classes here in New York, and at this one place that we go to we sing a kirtana every day at the beginning of the class.

the WILD honey pie: Do you guys have any strange rituals or band superstitions?
Nick Sadler: At one point it was like one can of Coke every time we got together or pizza. There’s always something we do ritualistically. We all drink SO much coffee! We chat roulette a lot. You see a lot of dicks, a lot of dudes waiting with their dicks out. You’re like ew (see audio above for more, it’s a MUST)!

the WILD honey pie: I’ve been listening to a lot of Monsters of Folk lately, you know the super group with Conor Oberst, M. Ward, Jim James and Mike Yogis. If you could create your own super group, who would be in it?
Nick Sadler: That’d be tough cause I like a lot of different music. But the first person that comes to mind, just based on folk music is, I would love to create a super group that had Leo Kottke on guitar. Maybe first off I’d say Kid Cudi and Leo Kottke, and [Jason wants] Lady Gaga on drums (more in audio).

the WILD honey pie: Your music has been described as “everyone high-fiving everyone”. If you could high-five one celebrity, who would it be?
Nick Sadler: We probably give a collective high-five to Mariah Carey and Beyonce maybe with like a behind the back high-five to Lady Gaga.

the WILD honey pie: If you could fly, would you rather have wings or just be able to fly like superman?
Nick Sadler: Jason says without and I’d have to agree. Although they’re very pretty, I think [wings] are restrictive and probably pretty annoying. Flying in general will get you girls.

the WILD honey pie: Who’s your favorite actress? If you could sing her one song in an attempt to seduce her, what would it be?
Nick Sadler: My favorite actress is Delphine Seyrig. She was in a movie called Daughters of Darness. She is beautiful and completely brilliant and no longer living, but I’d probably just say her. (For song, see audio)

the WILD honey pie (Queen Bee): Would you rather have no nipples, or nipples the size of pepperonis?
Nick Sadler: We might go with pepperoni because we all like pizza. I think no nipples probably. The pepperoni nipples would probably produce more nipple hair right?

the WILD honey pie: Who in the band has the strangest phobias? What is it?
Nick Sadler: Probably me. Without a doubt me. Where ever I go, no matter what apartment I live in, I’m staying on someone’s couch, I’m in a basement somewhere, I’m always afraid inflicted by some mysterious carbon monoxide gas poisoning. It’s recking my sinuses and making me feel dizzy and tired. Even if I’m driving in a van in tour, the exhaust is leaking and I can smell carbon monoxide. It’s become this thing that everyone jokes about. To be truthful to you, it’s real!

the WILD honey pie: Your debut album was just released, and was very well received. What was it like to read your first positive review?
Nick Sadler: We’re all really really excited. It took a long time and a lot of effort. For lack of a better term, it took a lot of blood, sweat, and tears to make the album really happen for us. To see a review at all is like confirmation that we did it and it’s just really nice to see that people are enjoying it the way we do.

the WILD honey pie: In all my interviews… opportunity to say something to the listeners
Nick Sadler: Besides the question that we have fans? Come see us play. We’re gonna be on tour for the next three months, and come say what’s up to us. We’ll high-five and we’ll hang out and have a good time.
