Shuffle Through The Wild Honey Pie

I was recently in Boulder, Colorado visiting my old college friends. Before my visit, I checked to find out if there were going be any good bands playing at the Fox Theatre or Boulder Theatre, but nothing fit my schedule. It was because of this that I was stoked to hear that an indie bluegrass band would be playing a gig at the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art. Open bar, great art, good friends, and amazing music. What a combo! Below is an interview I conducted with the band.

the WILD honey pie: The US is filled with great venues. Which is your favorite?
Elephant Revival: Denver’s Swallow Hill. Beautiful room with great acoustics and a listening audience—always inspires us to play great.

the WILD honey pie: What’s the most played song in your music library?
Elephant Revival: Any song off Taarka’s newest album (head to www.taarka.com).

the WILD honey pie: How does one come about playing the washboard. It’s a pretty random (and creative) instrument!
Elephant Revival: Bonnie, in her early years, was always using her hands and their rhythmic tendencies to create percussive sounds. Her Dad, who is very supportive of [his] daughter’s musicality, took her to buy a washboard at a bluegrass festival in Winfield, Kansas. That afternoon, she played on a campground stage.

the WILD honey pie: How are Boulder crowds different than elsewhere?
Elephant Revival: Boulder is currently our biggest market… it is home of course. The people are very energetic and seem to know our repertoire—which is obvious in their dance moves!

the WILD honey pie: What’s the craziest thing you’ve done a show?
Elephant Revival: Sage, dressed as a whoopee cushion, mooned the crowd during Ring Around the Moon on Halloween.

the WILD honey pie: You’re stranded on a dessert island with one person and an object. Who is with you and what do you bring?
Elephant Revival: An expert sailor and a sailboat.

the WILD honey pie: Doc Brown (Back To The Future) gives you the keys to the Dalorean. When and where do you travel? Why?
Elephant Revival: On a very exciting tour. Thanks Doc, we needed a new band vehicle. Can we strap the upright bass to the hood?

the WILD honey pie: I recently saw you perform at the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art. Great show! Which artist’s work epitomizes your music?
Elephant Revival: Not sure yet… we’re taking submissions!

the WILD honey pie: What’s your favorite Boulder restaurant? Ever heard one of your songs played while you were dining out?
Elephant Revival: Dot’s Diner on the Hill, late night on weekends. Not yet.

the WILD honey pie: What invention are you waiting for?
Elephant Revival: The Nuclear weapon disintegrator

the WILD honey pie: What now for Elephant Revival?
Elephant Revival: We are releasing our second studio album in May!
Integrative art… aligning ourselves with organizations working towards sustainability, permaculture design, relief and humanitarian efforts, other types of art and circus performances to name a few of the things we have an interest in supporting.

the WILD honey pie: Thanks for taking the time to answer our questions! Anything you want to say to the readers of the WILD honey pie?
Elephant Revival: Check us out at the Boulder Theater on February 5th as we fundraise for the people of the Pine Ridge Reservation to provide fuel and firewood for emergency heating assistance through supporting a newly started organization called the Buffalo Heart Project in partnership with Conscious Alliance (head to www.consciousalliance.org), Art that Feeds (click here). We will be joined by our friends: Boulder Acoustic Society, Reed Foehl, Laura Goldhamer and the Silver Nail, Jim Page (a Seattle-based activist songwriter), and the Plenty Wolf Singers on the Native American drum. There will be a modest and interesting Silent Auction accompanied by a tasty bake sale. Come enjoy music for a good cause!
