Fans came out in droves to see this year’s hottest band, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros play the second to last slot at Newport on Sunday. Alex Ebert and Jade played out their onstage love affair in songs such as Jade and the superstar song Home from the band’s debut album Up from Below.
Sadly, the planners of Newport vastly underestimated the turnout for the show and had the band perform in a tent sized perfectly for a high school talent show. I had seen the band perform twice before and it seemed that something was lost in the open air of the stage. 40 Day Dream lacked the coherence and sheer volume that it contained when I saw them at Red Rocks and in Boulder, CO.
If I hadn’t seen the band at their best, I probably would have thought it was a great concert, but having seen them perform two epic shows before, I knew what an Edward Sharpe show could be. My advice? If you see them, go see them indoors or at an appropriate outdoor venue such as a Bowl; it will be a truly memorable experience if you do.
