I’ll be the first to admit that I’m on quite the folk kick at the moment. From my euphoric The Low Anthem experience to Pearl and the Beard’s album release show the other night, I can’t help but indulge my recent urges.
The ‘impossible to Google’ Danish band, CODY, is fueling my addiction with their 2009 LP, Songs. CODY is pretty well known in Denmark, or at least it appears that way on the internet. They’ve opened up for The National, Band of Horses, Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, and Black Francis, and are slated to play the Spor and Roskilde Festivals in their native country.
Songs was released it in 2009 and includes the endearing, emotionally gripping, “Remember When”, a track that has quickly become one of my new favorites. It’s is a beautiful song that opens quietly with stark harmonica and is quickly met by the stomping of a kick drum and string-accompanied vocals. “Remember When” plays out like a tragic poem of nostalgia and regret, yet the simplicity of it all strikes me most. It’s a concise song that doesn’t waste time; a quick intro that makes way for perfectly delicate layers of piano, guitar, strings, and vocals.
