So, I had this blog called Dear Lilith Fair 2010 where I was trying to get on the Lilith Fair tour. That didn’t work out, and I looked around me at all of the amazing women musicians who were not going to be on the tour, and so I decided to start my own music festival! Yes. I am finding it is possible. It is an incredible amount of work, but it is so exciting to be creating and building community like this. People get excited and want to work together to make something happen! The festival is called TINDERBOX Music Festival and will happen on September 26, 2010 at Southpaw in Brooklyn, NY. It will be a full day of music on 2 stages featuring female artists and female fronted bands in all sorts of musical genres– from rap to singer/songwriter!
Here is the TINDERBOX Mission:
Tinderbox Music Festival aims to create more space for women musicians by bringing together and promoting established and emerging female artists. Rooted in the vibrant New York City music scene, Tinderbox fosters community by providing opportunities to perform, collaborate, and connect. Tinderbox donates 100% of proceeds after cost to organizations involved in helping the next generation of women musicians.
Proceeds from TINDERBOX 2010 will go to these amazing NYC organizations:
WILLIE MAE ROCK CAMP FOR GIRLS
Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls is a non-profit music and mentoring program that empowers girls and women through music education and activities that foster self-respect, leadership skills, creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration.
Girls Write Now provides guidance, support, and opportunities for New York City’s underserved or at-risk high school girls, enabling them to develop their creative, independent voices, explore careers in professional writing, and learn how to make healthy choices in school, career, and life.
TINDERBOX is a grassroots event. We are raising funds so we can make it happen and give back to the organizations on Kickstarter! We only have a few days left, so if you are in line with our mission, please donate anything you can (even $10 helps)!
We will be opening submissions for emerging/local artists very soon! You can keep up to date with everything about TINDERBOX at: www.tinderboxmusicfestival.com
