Where I’m Going – Cut Copy Where I’m Going – Cut Copy (Free Download / Pre-order)

As far as I am concerned In Ghost Colours was a near perfect record. It was a flawless mix of everything I love, bouncy and playful, weirdly nostalgic and even contained a sax solo to rival David Bowie. Thank god Cut Copy (@cutcopy) didn’t try and make it again.

Dan Whitford and Co decided to go for a more trace record for Zonoscope, leaving behind the neon flavored beats for a more jungle thumping.  The hallmarks of what makes Cut Copy the global dance sensation that they are today are still there, in spite of the different inspirations. The beats force even the most passive of listeners to dance and the breaks are guaranteed to turn anything from a dinner party to a club into an orgy of ecstatic dancing.

Zonoscope’s brilliance is in the beats, the ever changing and always interesting beats. It is exactly what you hope a dance album would be. From the pulsing of “Need You Know” to the primal jungle loops of “Blink and You’ll Miss the Revolution”, there is nothing repetitive about this record. It simply keeps you dancing. Perhaps it is the off assortment of percussion that they used, which according to Whitford consisted of, “all sorts of strange bongos, rototoms, congas, 10 kinds of shaker, 15 different cowbells; anything and everything. Even wine bottles filled with different amounts of water.” Or perhaps they are just really brilliant.

The gem of Zonoscope comes in the beginning, with what will go down as one of my top track 1 side 1’s ever. “Need You Now” has it all: a fantastic build and a killer break and feels completely different form the Cut Copy songs that came before. It’s the perfect way to start an album that is so damn good.

Undoubtedly the most talented couple of boys out there in the Americana/folk world at the moment. The soul and pain they put forth in their music makes it so you can begin to see the actual ghosts Marcus sings about circling him, taunting him. The painful wails toward the end imply the realization, the turning point, where you become so completely and totally miserable yet accepting it and appreciating your agony. That is what I personally love about Mumford and Sons. Their songs aren’t attempting to make you come out of your depression or dark, manic places, but they help you stay there and let you come to feel everything that that plagues you and churns your stomach and keeps you up during the night without being embarrassed with it. Very Wordsworthian and very powerful.

Whoa, really? Wild Honey Pie, you rock, but this Cut Copy album does not. It’s painfully mediocre and tedious. I had high hopes for it, but the band really missed. More here: http://bit.ly/hxVrak
