While everyone was disappointed that Magic Kids wasn’t able to make it out to The Knitting Factory on Wednesday (including Cults who actually dedicated a song to the missing trio), I certainly wouldn’t say that anyone in attendance left the show dissappointed. Superhumanoids stepped up to fill the second slot while Cults ended the night with a dreamy bang.

Having seen both bands at SXSW recently, it was pretty amazing to catch them in a more intimate setting. Superhumanoids, as they always do, impressed me from beginning to end with their seamless incorporation of electronic elements, never taking the focus off of Sarah Chernoff’s stunning vocals and Cameron Parkins’ forceful but delicate guitar accents.  They transitioned with ease from melodic- to beat-driven songs, drummer Evan Weinerman guiding the band songs with his adapted, cocktail kit.

After seeing Cults for a second time, I’ve realized extremely long hair and/or a striking resemblance to Neil Patrick Harris (the drummer’s resemblance is uncanny) is a requirement for playing with Brian Oblivion and Madeline Follin.  While their set was disappointingly short at just over 30 minutes, they successfully lulled the audience into a sense of psychedelic calm. Follin’s vocals were spot on, though unfortunately far too quiet in the audio mix, and the rest of the band played a tight, wistful set. Oblivion did, in a pretty hilarious mix-up, say that it was his third time playing Mercury Lounge. Never fear Brian, New Yorkers are certainly forgiving to out of town bands having to navigate this confusing place.

The good news is that anyone outside of New York has the chance to see the full glory of this short tour’s lineup. Beginning tonight in Boston, these bands, Magic Kids included, will be hitting cities throughout the Northeast through next Friday. I highly recommend you wise up and grab a ticket.
