 THEM CROOKED VULTURES

So about two weeks ago, I was on Facebook when out of the blue, my friend Josh messages me, and told me that the super band Them Crooked Vultures (made up of Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age, Dave Grohl of Nirvana/Foo Fighters, and John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin) were playing the Roseland Ballroom on February 7.

Well I was happier than a fat guy at a bakery! I bought tickets and soon enough, after a few train rides, was standing in line, waiting to see one of the great bands in today’s music scene. After a quick frisking by the security guards (they were convinced my friend had weed on him) we found ourselves in front of the stage and were ready for a great concert. Holy shit we were in for a surprise, and I mean this in the best way possible.

These guys come out who looked like the band’s road crew, and start to play. This band was called The Brought Low, and are a New York-based band. These guys were fucking raw, bluesy, and fresh. They were great. Then, the lights dim, and out comes Grohl, Homme, and John Paul Jones.

They proceeded to play one of the most ferocious and rocking shows I have ever been to. Songs like Elephant and Gunman got the crowd jumping and screaming, mosh-pitting, and laughing. John Paul Jones took an amazing organ solo, but what really shocked me was the variety of instruments he was playing.

The list varies from a lap steel style bass, to a mandolin and a 12 string bass with light up frets! Alain Johaness, who was the bands back up guitarist and bassist was brilliant. In the nineties, this guy was in a band called Eleven. The band had five or six albums, and had a few singles as well. He has played guitar, bass, and backing vocals on tracks with Chris Cornell, Queens of the Stone Age, Mark Lanegan, and Desert Sessions. This guy is really talented.

Back to the concert! Homme’s deep guitar solos, and amazing voice only carried the band’s sound further. And finally, Grohl, the best drummer I have ever personally seen, stole the show. I believe over the course of the show he broke nine sticks?! What an amazing band! Go and see them if you can get tickets, I guarantee you won’t regret it.
