When you go to see your favorite band live, the results can be absolutely devastating. If that band fails to completely blow you away, you’re left questioning what makes them your favorite, as well as why you should ever support them again (i.e. merchandise, actually buying their albums, etc.). This happens all the time, even to bands that are great performers, but have a poor night.
Seeing your top band live can also work in the opposite way, as it did on Wednesday night when I saw The Antlers. I knew coming in that the energy and emotion of their album was going to be hard to beat. I couldn’t even IMAGINE having to play their style of music live, let alone, every night. I was setting myself up for disaster when I bought those tickets. Right? Wrong!
From the moment Peter Silberman and company came onto the stage, there was a euphoric aura that swept through the concert hall. The expressions of pain on Silberman’s face, ever-constant mood-setting electronics, and momentous drum beats all set the stage for The Antlers‘ epic concept album to unfold.
Nearly every song from the new album, Hospice, was featured at Wednesday’s show, and not a single one was a disappointment. Highlights of the evening included drummer, Michael Lerner’s rigorous percussion-work during “Two”, as well as their absolutely legendary finale, “Epilogue”.
The entire show was extremely entertaining. And I’m not just saying that because I’m a big fan! I could just as well just have known them beforehand, and still loved the gig. The Antlers gave London something to talk about Wednesday, and I’m sure this won’t be the last time fans are blown away by a stellar performance from the band. Enjoy the following songs.
