The Lexington is starting a new concert series called Ja Ja Ja that is used to promote Scandinavian music. On Thursday night, I attended the inaugural event, thinking that maybe (just maybe) I would stumble upon the next great indie act. Well, THAT didn’t happen. Two of the bands aren’t even worthy of mentioning, while the other two are worth at least a couple minutes of your time. Francis, of Sweden was the most impressive. The lead singer couldn’t have been more animated, interacting with the crowd constantly, and even going into the audience to (nearly) make out with a female fan. Interesting.
Piano-led pop beats were complimented by unrefined female vocals, making Francis a unique band that will appeal to a very particular audience.
The two middle acts of the evening weren’t really anything impressive, but the final group was definitely worth staying for, if even for sheer entertainment value. Comprised of a high energy singer and a DJ, TV Off of Finland created fun music that got the crowd back on their feet and dancing after the previous performances. The lyrics were pathetically simple, and meaningless, yet this didn’t seem to matter to most of the crowd.
I hate to admit it, but the lack of interesting lyrics became insignificant due to the incredible poppiness of her voice and the the group’s stage presence. Overall, Ja Ja Ja was an average show, but it was really nice to see what indie music is like in a different region of the world.
