Often times, I’ll go to a show just to find new bands. That was exactly the case the other night when I saw Harlem perform at The Mercury Lounge in New York City. Due to the blizzard outside, the gig was nearly empty at first. It was pretty disappointing.
By the time Harlem hit the stage, however, the place was decently full (kind of). For some reason, no one would stand near the stage, it was really weird. When they started playing, it was pretty clear that they would be having a good time. Their music was exciting, and sounded great (this at a venue which doesn’t have the best acoustics).
Harlem had a bit of trouble with the shitty equipment that was given to them, but they managed to play a great set anyways. Song after song was hard-hitting, and instantly gratifying. They’re music is in-your-face and very rough around the edges, but very comprehensive at the same time.
I was slightly disappointed because Harlem didn’t play for all that long. In fact, they played one of the shortest sets of any show I’ve ever been to. It seemed like they got on stage, played a song, then left the stage. Obviously they played more than just one song, but it couldn’t have lasted more than 45 minutes. This might have been more obvious to me because I went to see Yeasayer the night before, and they played a massive set. That show was fucking epic!
Anyways, Harlem was legit, so if you have a chance to see them live, check them out. They’re from Austin, Texas, so they’re going to be at SXSW. That is one music festival you HAVE to go to once in your life. Their sophomore album is being released this Spring, so keep an eye out for that. Enjoy the track below.
