When I was working at MTV, I was given an album by Cold Cave. I wasn’t overly impressed, but I thought it would grow on me. Unfortunately, it got lost in the shuffle, and I couldn’t really give it an adequate listen. Fast forward three months to a couple weeks ago when I saw that they would be performing in New York City at Mercury Lounge. I’d never been, and had heard good things, so I figured why not?
Bad decision. After dinner with a cousin of mine, I headed to the show. I got there a bit late and couldn’t really get a great view of the band. The place was PACKED, but even still, the crowd didn’t seem that into it. Some swaying was the most action I saw all night. I worked my way to a spot where I could see the band better, and started evaluating. There were three of them on stage (two guys and a girl).
Vocal duties were split between Wesley Eisold and Caralee McElroy (Wesley sang more though). I have to recognize the lyrical talent that Wesley possesses. He’s good at what he does (he’s given songwriting credit for Fall Out Boy songs The Carpel Tunnel Of Love, Golden, and Bang The Doldrums), however, this didn’t translate into an enjoyable live experience. Vocals were drowned out by poor acoustics, while instrumentals were nothing to write home about.
I hate to trash bands, but Cold Cave just wasn’t good live. Maybe under different circumstances, I could have enjoyed it more, but I highly doubt that anything would change the fact that their music is best listened to with a high quality stereo in the comfort of your own home.
I’m going to keep this short because there’s not much more I can say. If you’re a big Cold Cave fan, you’ll probably enjoy seeing them no matter what. If you’re simply looking for a fun concert to attend, though, skip this band and give another band a shot. Sorry!
