I generally do what I can to avoid reviewing albums of bands I have worked with at some point in the past. I’m throwing that rule out the window for this one. A few years back, I was a camp counselor in Bumfuck, PA. I was a bit miserable that summer for one reason or another (possibly because of a girl), and if it weren’t for Brit pop, that summer would have been a much more tedious experience. I have my British coworkers to thanks for that. It was during this summer that I was exposed to the greatness of The Fratellis, The Kooks, The Libertines, and more.
The reason I mention all this is because I was recently exposed to the catchy tunes of Cha-Cha. After hearing one song by them, I contacted their management and now, they’re writing article for the WILD honey pie. Now I’ve listened to the album for a while now, and it’s only grown on me. At first, I was addicted only to a few songs, The Fellowship and Phonographic Love. Not anymore. Songs such as Second Chances, Sit You Down, Flashlight, and Seventies Casualty are a bit Kook-ish, but I’m not rating this album in originality. If I were, maybe I wouldn’t be rating it so highly.
That doesn’t seem to be what Cha-Cha is trying to accomplish with We Are…, as I believe this is a positively invigorating work that delivers 40 minutes of lovable tunes. Because that’s what their music is. It’s absolutely lovable. It couldn’t have dropped at a better time either! The summer is fast approaching and as I plan to spend plenty of time in Central Park, this album with most definitely accompany me on many of those trips.
Check out the songs below, which happen to be a couple of my favorites at the moment, and see why I gave this album a 7.4 out of 10. One of the most enjoyable, ‘summer is in the air’ albums of the year. Free download of The Fellowship here.
