Beginning a month long residency today at Pianos and Santos Party House, St. Lucia (@stlucianewyork) is perhaps most interesting considering the history of Jean-Philip Grobler, the man behind the project’s unique sound. Originally from South Africa, Grobler spent most of his youth traveling and performing with a local boys choir. Despite the classical education he received, his true musical calling arrived in the form of Radiohead’s OK Computer – a far stretch from anything he had heard before and a healthy escape from the structured life he was leading. Inspired to leave home and learn more, he studied music in Liverpool before ending up in New York to write and record his first EP. Continue Reading

SASQUATCH AND PRIMAVERA SOUND ANNOUNCE 2012 LINE-UPS

Posted on 03 February 2012 by Hannah Ylan

sasquatch primaverasound SASQUATCH AND PRIMAVERA SOUND ANNOUNCE 2012 LINE UPS

What joy we festival lovers received today! Aye, the line-ups for two of the best festivals of the summer, Sasquatch and Primavera Sound, were released, and are they ever a gift from the festival deities on high. Both are absolutely stuffed with bands that we love and have been geeking out over for months if not years.

Sasquatch, one of our favorite line-ups from last year as well, boasts artists that will sound breathtaking in the Gorge. The dreams you have about seeing Bon Iver under the stars and surrounded by landscapes as picturesque as his music can finally come true — as can your dreams of seeing Spiritualized and Tenacious D all in one weekend. Beck and Jack White are sharing headlining duties with Bon Iver, so all nights will end gloriously.

Primavera Sound, of course, is getting some of the most diverse and amazing artists in the world to gather in Barcelona — because who doesn’t want to gather in Barcelona? Bjork, Dirty Three, Refused, Wilco, Jeff Mangum, The xx, and Beirut are only some of the acts that will be filling the city with their awesome sounds.

Here are the full lineups for Sasquatch and Primavera Sound, and the adorable Sasquatch video is below. Start saving kids; it looks like it’s going to be an expensive summer.

Full Sasquatch line-up:

Jack White, Beck, Bon Iver, Pretty Lights, Tenacious D, The Shins, Beirut, Girl Talk, The Roots, The Head & The Heart, Portlandia, Feist, Silversun Pickups, Metric, Explosions In The Sky, The Joy Formidable, Mogwai, Nero (DJ), M. Ward, John Reilly & Friends, Childish Gambino, St. Vincent, The Civil Wars, Jamey Johnson, Little Dragon, Tune-Yards, Wild Flag, Blind Pilot, Wolfgang Gartner, Beats Antique, Apparat, The Walkmen, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Mark Lanegan Band, Spiritualized, Blitzen Trapper, The Cave Singers, Shabazz Palaces, Fun., Grouplove, Tycho, Sbtrkt, Strfkr, Ted Leo and the Pharmacists, Deer Tick, Imelda May, Alabama Shakes, Dum Dum Girls, The Helio Sequence, Kurt Vile, Cloud Cult, We Are Augustines, Ben Howard, Here We Go Magic, Zola Jesus, The War On Drugs, Shearwater, Cass McCombs, Active Child, Trampled By Turtles, Charles Bradley & His Extraordinaires, Araabmuzik, Star Slinger, L.A. Pop (borderline indie?) trio Miike Snow have teamed up with fellow Swede Lykke Li to bring us “Black Tin Box,” another taste of what’s to come from their forthcoming LP Happy To You, due out March 26th. No stranger to collaboration, Ms. Li has added her talents to plenty of other projects, including Bon Iver and Peter Bjorn and John, but her presence here is so Continue Reading

andrew bird NEW ANDREW BIRD TRACK MARKS HIGH POINT FOR THE MUSICAL WHISTLE [STREAM]

Yesterday, Andrew Bird (@andrewbird) revealed a stream of “Eyeoneye” the first track off of his new album Break It Yourself set to be released on March 6th via indie label Mom + Pop Records. “Eyeoneye” is uniquely stunning, combining the exotic tone of Middle Eastern rambling guitars with the familiar indie pop/rock sound of Bird’s evocative, soaring vocals. Recorded and produced by Bird along the Mississippi River, this release will mark the 12th studio album from the prolific Chicago-bred multi-instrumentalist. death cab for cutie 550x550 DEATH CAB IS GOING ON TOUR WITH A FULL ORCHESTRA [VIDEO]

News like this makes my day. One of my absolute favorite bands, Washington-natives Death Cab for Cutie (@dcfc), are going on tour this spring with stops slated in New York, Maryland, Texas, and beyond. The band was last in our fair city this past summer for a breathtaking show at the Williamsburg Waterfront, and yet, I’m somehow more excited to see them at the famed Beacon Theatre in Manhattan. Oh, and did I mention they’re visiting with a full orchestra! This isn’t the first foray into the indie music world for San Fran’s Magik*Magik Orchestra. They have previously collaborated with not only The Dodos and The Walkmen, but also Mike Patton, and John Vanderslice. Continue Reading

Woo hoo hooray hoorah, fireworks celebration! The Shins (@theshins) have finally released a new song and it’s pretty damn good! I refuse to make any claims regarding how it stands up to their previous material this soon, but I will say that I’m getting extremely excited for the release of their fourth studio album, Port of Morrow, out via Aural Apothecary and Columbia Records on March 20. Wait, seriously? This is only their fourth album? Continue Reading

COACHELLA 2012 LINEUP REVEALED

Posted on 10 January 2012 by Lauren

coachella2012 608x8101 550x732 COACHELLA 2012 LINEUP REVEALED

Yesterday, Coachella officially announced the line-up for this year’s festival. While the move to hold the event over two consecutive weekends annoys me personally, I’m not shocked considering how insanely packed the grounds were when I attended in 2010. As you can see from the poster above, Coachella is bringing just about everyone you could hope to see to the same set of stages. If you’re hoping to go, you’d better snag your tickets NOW since they definitely won’t last.

For those of you who plan to attend: I wish you the best of luck at seeing the bands you want. While not impossible, the grounds are large enough to make balancing the phenomenal music and trips between stages extremely difficult. I guess there are much worse problems to have, though!
