Now that you’ve read through our top songs and records of the year, it’s time to take a look at the rest; the pop music, hip-hop, metal and punk that helped make such a great year. These records aren’t exactly orphans, most of them have gotten plenty of acclaim and even more sales, but still, they deserve their due. These are the ‘Outliers’ Records of the year, everything but our typical taste of indie and a whole lot of [READ ON]

Compiling our end of year lists is generally always a contentious affair. Not uncommon are emails back and forth about why this song rather than that song should be number 22 or shouting matches (at least the digital equivalent) over whether or not someone should have even made the list, much less have been number one. This year, arguments were kept to a minimum, as almost all of us had the same artist near the top of our list, the same album in the top 5 and, curiously, numerous songs from that album peppering the top 100 songs. While there was definitely some competition, a spectacular and much loved debut from alt-J for example, there was still only one clear victor [READ ON]

2012 was a spectacular year in music — one with so many records we truly loved that narrowing down the list was difficult. Ordering it, however, was almost impossible. Another year has passed, and with that comes our best attempt to gather our favorite tracks and order them from best to, well, the very best. This collective is about as subjective as it gets — it’s not something that necessarily represents what was popular or what certain sites wrote about. It’s simply the music we loved in 2012.

Without further ado, we present to you our list of the top 100 songs of 2012. While we had a blast putting this together, it didn’t come without an argument or two. What we agreed to below, however, is something we’re truly excited to share with you. These 100 songs are the tracks [READ ON]

Whether a result of the growth in music’s DIY culture, a reaction to our declining attention span or simply a method to explore new sonic territory, EPs (and at times, 7″) have increasingly become the bread and butter of almost all new projects. A tightly packed unit of songs, EPs allow musicians the opportunity to present a cohesive, thematic tone — a method sometimes preferable to the sprawl of a full-length release. They can also act as a way to showcase a few songs with starkly different styles, acting as a sort of appetizer to an artist’s full talent.

Below, you’ll find our favorite picks for EPs released in 2012. Not surprisingly, the records below represent some of our favorite compositions of the entire year, full-length [READ ON]
