Among the southern rock scene prevalent in South Carolina, there’s a smaller community of artists combining rock with tinges of heartfelt folk and country. Rising from this bunch is Cancellieri, otherwise known as songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Ryan Hutchens of Columbia, South Carolina. Creating genre-spanning, atmospheric indie folk rock with careful instrumentation, Hutchens started humbly busking and playing for family and friends. The sincere closeness with his music can be heard on his debut album, Welcome to Mount Pleasant, most notably on the first track “Oregon”. Like much of Cancellieri’s music, the song progresses slowly to its full splendor. Several guitar lines tug the ear tenderly in a every direction, billowing into a transfixing soundscape. As the song proceeds, Hutchens delicately croons about a westward journey that gradually becomes enveloped in a wash of shoegaze guitar and cymbals until the song culminates in a controlled frenzy.
