For every “this band sounds like this band” comparison, there’s a thousand people who won’t agree, but dammit I’ll do it anyway. While I hate making general statements, here I go:
“Any fan of that band Mates of State will love the band Savoir Adore“
That wasn’t too bad, was it? Mates of State, originally of Lawrence, Kansas (rock chalk!) fits no mold. Their songs are pop anthems to some (The Re-Arranger), and love songs for others (Like u Crazy). The husband-wife team has been a favorite of mine since I was in college, in search of some cheerful music to hit the slopes with. Their songs Goods, Now, I Got This Feelin’, and For the Actor helped me through many powder days at Vail (damn was I spoiled).
With their newest effort, Crushes, they’ve taken the task of covering gems by Girls, Fleetwood Mack, Belle & Sebastian, Death Cab for Cutie, and even The Mars Volta. While each is obviously a cover, they add their own perspective on every aspect of the original by invigorating them with their uplifting male/female vocals and simplified instrumentals.
Here’s where Savoir Adore of Brooklyn enters the picture. They too share male/female vocalization techniques (relationship unconfirmed), as well as their quirky, minimalistic, electronically-effected style. After shooting a couple videos with them down at SXSW, I’m hoping that they’ll be able to recreate the success of the aforementioned band.
That’s enough of me listing of reason why I think they’re similar. Listen to these songs, and tell us if you agree. If so, why? If no, why?
