Though new releases tend to slow around the holiday weekend, there’s still plenty to keep you satisfied! If you’re on your way out of town and are in need of new traffic “jams,” or if you’re staying put and are ready for a different soundtrack to your day, we’ve got you covered! Devonté Hynes of Blood Orange graced us with his new album, Freetown Sound, a few days early, giving us a gorgeous harmony of hip hop, soul and new wave, serving up both solid beats and, more importantly, an accessible, powerful narration of racial injustice. London-based Metronomy is back with their album Summer 08 in which the band further explores their synthesis of rock and electronic sound.
Natasha Khan’s project, Bat For Lashes, has just released a haunting concept album, The Bride, about a bride whose fiancé is killed on the way to their wedding and what comes after the tragedy. DIY British band, Martha, delivers another perfect blend of catchy pop-punk guitar riffs and confessional, melancholic lyrics. Two wonderful groups which live on Soundcloud — Chicago’s Varsity (who will be playing in New York July 11th) and Jay Som (who is currently on tour with Mitski!) — have both come out with respective mini EPs, ranging from pure rock n’ roll to soothing love songs. Have a happy holiday weekend, and be sure to follow our top release playlist to be updated on all of the hot new tracks!
