The Tailor – Blitzen Trapper The Tailor – Blitzen Trapper (Buy)
Hailing from Portland, Oregon Blitzen Trapper recently released their sixth studio album, Destroyer of the Void, nearly two years after their previous record, Furr, made it all the way to the #13 spot in Rolling Stone. Hoping to ride the wave of publicity and notoriety from Furr, Blitzen Trapper has fallen short.
During my first listen through this album, I felt as if there was a few good tracks hidden within. Second time around, I found Destroyer of the Void to grow on me a bit (but only a bit). Much like watching a movie over and over, this album proved to reveal itself more each time.
The opening and title track Destroyer of the Void begins with a 60’s British invasion rock impression with some additional folky sounds and is rather pleasant in the journey it takes. The album then proceeds to disappoint with a gradual letdown. After the title track, I was rather excited to hear what else Blitzen Trapper had in store, yet the rest of the album left me thinking that the built up energy within the band never saw the light of day.
Destroyer of the Void is filled with of folksy storytelling and smooth melodies that make for good listening, but lacks any hiatus from their methodical storytelling format. While there is no bad songs on this album, I just couldn’t find another track as exciting as Destroyer of the Void. A solid album over all and pleasant on the ears, just lacking the extra little energy that would make it great. I give this album a 7.0 as its a good listen, but failed to jump out at me or make me believe that I would be listening to it again any time in the future.
