Big Thief are Personal on New Track ‘Mythological Beauty’ [Stream]

After receiving a ton of critical acclaim at the end of last year, Big Thief are indie newcomers no more. The Brooklyn band recently unveiled some details of their forthcoming sophomore album Capacity, due out in June, and shared the lead single “Mythological Beauty,” which is accompanied by a hauntingly beautiful video. Capacity is be the follow-up to last year’s debut album Masterpiece, which we listed as our number 2 album of 2016. It may seem like a quick turnaround in between albums, but if we’ve learned anything from this band over the last several months, it’s that they will surely continue to exceed our expectations.

The deeply personal storytelling of “Mythological Beauty” comes from lyricist and lead singer Adrianne Lenker, who fills the 5-minute track with reflections on her relationship with her mother. With her voice hushed and deep at times and gracefully airy at others, Lenker delves into the past in a way that paints painful moments with empathy and forgiveness. With lines like “There is a child inside you who’s trying to raise a child in me” and a verse recalling Lenker’s near-death experience as a child, the song’s emotional honesty layers personal reflection with moving tribute.

Lenker recently told more details of her fascinating life story to Pitchfork. Capacity is out June 9 on Saddle Creek.
