For those unfamiliar, Beirut is an American band founded by New Mexico native Zachary Condon. Though most describe them as indie, it’s really hard to put a finger on exactly what their vibe is. In fact, upon first listen you may mistake them for a French, or even Eastern European outfit. It’s their eclectic nature, and the diversity of their influences that makes Beirut and their music so damn interesting.
Out of either ignorance or stupidity, I have yet to mention them on The Wild Honey Pie. Until now that is. Earlier this month, Beirut released two new songs, “Goshen” and “East Harlem”, both of which will appear on the band’s third studio album, The Rip Tide, due out on August 30. These tracks are, in my opinion, some of the best stuff they’ve put out. We’re greeted with a far more accessible version of the band, yet it doesn’t feel for one second that they’re compromising their style at all.
For Beirut lovers and those new to the band, “East Harlem” is a track I’ve listened to about 30 times in the past week. It’s absolutely incredible. Give it a listen below.
