In honor of their trip down to SXSW, Bear Driver (@bear_driver) has released a few new songs available for free download on BandCamp. While each seems to stand alone with unique instrumental elements and distinct vocals, the combination of songs will form their next EP release Fugitive.
The first two tracks are perhaps the most similar in their overall tone and construction. “Fugitive”, with it’s buzzing guitars and screaming vocals, is the most up-tempo, while “Enemy” removes some of the grit, incorporating whistling and chill guitar riffs. Both have catchy hooks and powerful melodies, which I cannot wait to see manifest itself in an energetic live performance when I see them at SXSW.
The follow-up, “Jenny”, echoes its sound in an enormous fashion. The full, melodious female vocals resonate with each other and with the twangy electric guitar elements and drawn-out strings. Meanwhile, the drum patterns set the slow but driving beat that carries the song till the end. While it may not have the most upbeat of tones, it’s captivating and requires multiple listens to fully digest.
The most recent release, “Balloon Race”, showcases yet another side of the band. While “Jenny” has a slower, more melodic groove, this release keeps a faster pace and feels a bit more focused than the others. The track is a continuously perfect harmony of male and female vocals layered over a blanket of strings, chimes, synth tones, and even the occasional clarinet. The music is definitely a welcome trip back to a more psychedelic past.
