Armed with a ukulele, her eloquent voice, and an unusual burning passion for beards (horray for not having to shave!), Sophie Madeleine brings forth songs written and sung as if they are meant for only one set of ears. Her lyrics capture the essence of pillow talk and promises, with songs such as “You Are My Favorite” and “Take Your Love With Me”.
As much as I am a fan of Sophie Madeline, I will say that there are a few songs from her Love.Life.Ukulele album that fade into the category of forgettable. Songs such as “Who Will Buy” and “Hurry Locomotive” feel as though they lack the same strong story as the rest of the record. They just don’t stand on their own like others on the album. The rest, however, more than pick up the slack for the lesser tracks.
Songs such as “I Just Can’t Stop Myself”, “Not Worth The Pieces” and “Stars” are full of fantastic lyrics skillfully composed. They haunt my mind and leave my lips for days in the form of a whistle. That is until I have time to pick up my own uke and learn them!
I have been looking forward to seeing Sophie Madeline live here in NYC, at Joe’s Pub on September 10th and again at the Living Room on the 24th. I’m personally hoping for her to play her beard song. If Sophie brings as much fun as she does in “Love Cake” or “Gay Song”, then with out a doubt, these shows are going to be a fantastic time! Sophie, we ‘heart you online’!
