I’ve been a fan of the deliciously eccentric, Australian-based Architecture In Helsinki for about five or so years. Each album has offered something different – some I obsessed over, while others filled the time in between. Regardless, I applaud them for being consistently experimental while remaining true to their style. Their latest LP, Moment Bends, has truly rekindled my love for them. Offering a high quality, expertly-produced sound, this album proves that Architecture In Helsinki is progressing in all the right ways.

The album opens with, “Desert Island”, a subtle track that initially led me to question whether AIH  had abandoned their original sound. The second song, “Escapee”, however, provided the familiar instrumentation and flow I was hoping for. Along with similarly upbeat tracks like “Contact High & “YR Go To”, I found that they’ve learned to expand on their strengths and evolve from their weaknesses, all while retaining that signature sound for which they’re adored.

“Sleep Talkin’”, “I Know Deep Down” & “W.O.W.”  are the mellowest tracks on the album. Structured songs styles and easygoing vocal harmonies that meld into ambient synths make these a bit more accessible to those who may not be totally familiar with the band. Though I typically like their wacky, energetic stuff the most, “B4 3D” is actually one of my favourite songs and a wonderful closing choice for Moment Bends.  It’s a dreamy track, featuring rich, smooth vocals, endearing lyrics and shimmering percussion.

Throughout the album, I catch glimpses of what could be influences from Talking Heads. With an evident new wave influence, though, Architecture In Helsinki’s playful synths, thoughtful lyrics, and interesting vocal arrangements keep Moment Bends from sounding too throwback.  I’m really impressed, and more excited than ever, to see the progression this band will continue to make.
