The tiny Mercury Lounge was full, and had a nice long line outside, this Tuesday for Ambassadors show supporting The Postelles, who were celebrating their record release. It was a giant, and quite enthusiastic crowd for a Tuesday night. The kind of crowd that was so into the band and so happy to be there that Ambassadors couldn’t help but put on a spectacular show.
The whole night had the feeling of a house party, everyone was in a good mood and nothing was too serious. Sure, Mercury Lounge is small, but Ambassadors made it feel even smaller. The mixture of their seriously awesome hooks and beats and giddy performance made the whole audience feel like a bunch of friends together in someone’s basement.
About half way through their set at the Mercury Lounge I realized, lead singer Sam Harris totally looks like Jon Hamm. Or, what I imagine Jon Hamm looks like when he is on Comedy Death Ray or The Sarah Silverman Program. He acts like it too, his jaunty air, light stage banter and erratic dancing lighting up the stage. It helps that the music his band plays, funky indie pop, is so groovy.
Despite some keyboard issues, and a particularly feverish female fan’s bra throwing, the whole vibe of the show remained loose and relaxed. I’m sure this is in large part to Ambassador’s unique brand of heavy bass and thumping rhythms. On top of the fact that they are simply fun to watch prance about, they are also incredibly well rehearsed musicians, with not a note out of place on any of the songs. Even on their mellower songs that are laced with beautiful harmonies the high energy never let up. Ambassadors put on an amazing show, a fun show, and an intimate show and a show I cannot wait to experience again.
