Okay, I’ll admit it. I never heard of Kelowna B.C. indie band Yukon Blonde before fellow writer and founder of the WILD honey pie, Drone, gave me their self-titled debut album to review this week. After looking them up online and hearing a lot of other buzz about the band (a lot of listeners have compared to them to bands like Fleet Foxes and Local Natives, two bands I really like), I was very hopeful about the album. And it mostly lived up to my expectations…

Let’s start with the many things I like about the album; the album is full of dreamy notes, chords, and music that makes me feel like I’m laying down on a bench in Washington Square Park and staring at the clouds. For hour after hour. Each song seems to be delicately crafted to be a blend of awesome and semi-heavy guitar riffs, mixed with hazy background music and catchy lyrics. For example, the fourth track, Wind Blows cannot stop running through my mind. Seriously, it is the simplest, but most haunting chorus: “wind blows can you hear the wind blow listen to the raindrops outside of my window.” So beautiful in its simplicity!

My other favorite song on the album is the sixth track, Brides Song. I love Brides Song for its fusion of a soft and a louder sound along with a seemingly romantic set of lyrics and the band’s trademark dreamy music. I really love this track. Overall, all of the songs are very cohesive and kind of work together to make a uniform sound, which leads me to my only critique of the album.

While I liked it, after listening to it from start to finish, all of the songs started to sound similar to me. Maybe I just listen to too much indie rock or maybe I just want more surprises from a band that I take to be very talented. For example, after I listened to the first three tracks, Rather Be With You, Blood Cops, and Kumiko Song, I found myself wondering if I just listened to the same song for an elongated period of time. However, I’m looking forward to hearing more from this band; maybe songs that are a little more energetic and surprising? Regardless, I give the album a 3.5/5.
