I received a copy of Mika’s new album, The Boy Who Knew Too Much at work early this week, and have had a pretty good listen to it already. It lacks some of the strength of his debut album, but delivers with melodic consistency when necessary. Songs like Good Gone Girl and Lover Boy achieve the uplifting feeling that Mika has become known for.
It’s really hard to this album without comparing it to a Broadway show. It’s theatrical nature is also extremely reminiscent of Queen. Blame It On The Girls and Touches You are particularly good songs that are filled with hooks that can grab any listener. In my opinion, this is a solid sophomore attempt, and nearly outshines Mika’s 2007 debut, Life in Cartoon Motion.
Pick up a copy or at least check out the video posted below. It’s a bit “intense” for me, and not one of my favorite songs on the album, but it’ll give you an idea of what this guy’s about. Definitely has a flair for the theatrics.
And here’s a video from his debut album to compare it to. It’s called Grace Kelly, has got some definite references to Fred Mercury.
