With One Life Stand playing on repeat, I begin to reflect. No, this isn’t the first time I’ve listened to the new Hot Chip record, but I’m seriously judging it now. I’m not gonna lie, when I first heard the new album I was disappointed. I like Hot Chip, and expected big things (aka a pounding indie dance album).

It’s not bad though, not bad at all! I guess my expectations were so high because this album was taped in a proper recording studio (as opposed to a home studio) this time. After a thorough listen, I don’t know what difference that made.

The biggest difference with this album is the overall tempo. One Life Stand showcases a calmer Hot Chip crew that proves they are more than just an upbeat-producing indie electronic band. Though you can expect to hear some of the typical bounce-along songs (“Thieves in the Night”, “Hand Me Down Your Love”, “One Life Stand”) that this crew from Britain is known for, you’ll have to be prepared for a heavy dose of chill songs like “Brothers”, “Slush”, and “Alley Cats”.

To be honest, I’m somewhat new to Hot Chip. I love songs like “Wrestlers”, “Ready for the Floor”, and “And I Was a Boy From School”, hence I thought I was going to be purchasing a party album. One Life Stand, in my opinion, isn’t a party album. The lack of catchy choruses is fully made up for with quality lyrics and thought out structured instrumentals. This album is quality, even if it may not be what you’re expecting.

Yeah, maybe I spoke as if these guys have gone through a revolutionary change, completely changing their musical style, but that isn’t exactly the case. Alexis and Joe offer familiar vocals that are bound to impress even their harshest critics.
