In their debut album, Free Energy has created an album that seems like the perfect spring/summer album.  It just makes you want to roll down the windows, open the sunroof, and go on a road trip. This breakthrough album from the foursome hailing from Philly is truly a feel good album that makes it hard to resist bobbing your head.

The guitar wails right from the first track Free Energy and reminded me of a combination of AC/DC and Boston with its strong wailing guitar and intermingled guitar solos. Lead vocals Paul Spranger instantly reminded me of Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo, but he seems to be able to convey the emotions of the lyrics in an indescribable way. The band seems to be able to combine Spranger’s vocals with some great chords to control tempo and the emotions of the listener and make a great album.

The first three tracks of the album seem to set the mood perfectly for the entire album all being upbeat catchy songs. The title track Free Energy is the prefect opener with its catchy opening line “were breaking out this time”. In Dream City they slow it down a little bit but it ends up being just as catchy and this track is easily my favorite on the album with its pace changes and its overall upbeat sound.

Being a fan of Weezer and The Offspring, this album brought me back quite a ways to my middle school and early high school years and is a great, feel good, indie pop album. I have a a feeling that this will be a great album for this summer and that we will be hearing some great things from Free Energy in the future. I would give this album 4 bees out of 5, and hope to see more great things from them in the future (and hopefully a little more musical variety).
