Last month, we were given a very nice offer: to document ourselves on the WILD honey pie. We agreed immediately. It seemed simple and exciting.
Three weeks of dismal brainstorming followed. We over-thought the whole thing, ruled out the need for episodes, then came to some simple conclusions:
1. For starters, every band member will post. We rarely agree with each other, so all five of us should write.
2. We have cheap, consumer-level video cameras. We’ll post stuff.
3. Last, we won’t pretend. Though we are a busy pop-rock band, we do not inhabit a mystical landscape full of raw vitality, actualized youth, beautiful mayhem, and exalted pain. Being in a busy pop-rock band involves a great deal of sitting. Sitting and waiting.(Nothing, and I repeat nothing, resembles the lo-fi existential loft party implied by the sparse MySpace page of whatever drone-genius is being pushed this week. Those people are assholes).
This is Scott, by the way, guitarist of New Collisions. Nice to meet you. Given the continued willingness of my bandmates, you’ll have a chance to meet us all individually. Here’s a few photos of us playing live and doing other things. I’m the tall gentleman in the taller cup. The irate fellow is Zak, our drummer.
All that said, we promise not to post too many videos of us sitting. We tour a great deal, and always run into problems. These will prove interesting. We’ve been told that we’re odd people — and we certainly don’t seem comfortable in our own skin. There should be plenty to document, or at least ramble about.
Also, members of our band get very angry on occasion… usually about the minor inconveniences of modern society.
In the past, we’ve tried to come off as very positive and orderly. It’s probably time to own up to ourselves. Here’s a recent video of us from SXSW:
