Funny how playing a gig at Webster Hall turns you into a rockstar. I don’t necessarily mean that it brings fame and fortune (although if you look at the roster of musicians who debuted there throughout the venue’s 125 year history, that seems to be a valid point), but bands like to rock at Webster Hall — they like to blast the room with sound, turning every performance into some semblance of a blazing rock concert. The fact that most [READ ON]

For the past year, GIVERS (@giversmusic) have been über busy touring across continents and promoting their debut LP, released last June, but they’ve still found time to tweet about their hectic happenings. From posts about which venue they’re playing and with whom, to delirious tour rants and pictures to aid as a mini-scrapbook, their [READ ON]

BRITISH BANDS OF SXSW 2012

sxsw british1 BRITISH BANDS OF SXSW 2012

Considering SXSW’s influence within the music community, especially in indie circles, it’s no surprise that folks from across the pond clamber to be there. And no, it’s not just because of the great Tex-Mex and free beer. Honestly.

Despite the freebies, it’s a costly mission. Austin is a 15-hour journey from London, with connections, and hotels certainly aren’t cheap. Thankfully, bands can apply for funding via PRS For Music if their label is unwilling or unable to pay the bills to get them out there. As a result, there was a hearty British contingent present in Austin during [READ ON]

This past Sunday, Miniature Tigers (@miniaturetigers) headlined Bowery Ballroom in New York City for the first time in their careers.  Despite the rain and the fact that it was a Sunday, the band managed to sell out the show and delivered a sharp, memorable set comprised mostly of tracks from their recently released LP, Mia Pharaoh.  Opening duties for the evening were tasked by Geographer (@geographermusic), Chain Gang of 1974 (@tcgo1974), and Speak (@hearspeakhere).  Photos by the wonderful Erica [READ ON]

KIM NOVAK’S GOLDEN MEAN

The Golden Mean Kim Novak 550x550 KIM NOVAKS GOLDEN MEAN

When I was given Kim Novak (@kim_novak), a little know French band, began listening ready to hit next on my shuffler. They’re named after a screen siren from the Hitchcock era and play gauzy garage pop like everyone else. I was going to give it a chance because I was asked too, but that was all I was willing. Here’s the thing — when I allowed myself to actually sit down and listen, to enjoy and not think, I realized it was really damn good. It’s not revelatory, it’s not particularly new, but [READ ON]

10best BEST OF THE BEST OF SXSW 2012

Now that we’re a full week out of the outrageous/incredible festival known as SXSW, those four days and nights of music seems more like a dream than a real experience. Despite this, it simply wouldn’t feel right if we didn’t look back a reflect. So here we are, deciding how to best culminate this year’s SXSW. What better way than to simply tell you the ten bands that really kicked our asses. The bands that floored us, shocked [READ ON]

PITCHFORK MUSIC FEST ADDS DIRTY PROJECTORS, ICEAGE, SLEIGH BELLS

Chicago’s Pitchfork Music Festival (@pitchforkfest) recently announced that a slew of new bands have been added to their 2012 lineup. The first round of announcements from Pitchfork included big hitters Vampire Weekend, Feist, Cloud Nothings, Grimes, Hot Chip and Willis Earl Beal to name a few. In its seventh year, the fest will take place in Chicago’s easily navigated Union Park July 13-15. The now sold out three-day passes went for $110, and single-day passes are still available at $45 a pop, making it one of the most affordable festivals this summer. Cheers to the Pitchfork organization [READ ON]

Los Angeles indie rock troupe Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros (@edwardsharpe) have a new album, Here, hitting shelves on May 29th via Community Records. In addition, enough material developed during the recording session that a second album will be released before the end of the year. “Instead of putting it out all at once, we found that two different albums seemed to be forming,” said lead singer Alex Ebert. Tiny by name but certainly not by nature. Greg Walters and Cason Kelly have produced a larger than life sound with their debut EP Those Of Us Still Alive. Combining a diverse collection of sounds, the duo collectively known as Tiny Victories (@tinyvictories_) created a five track project that sounds as though it’s powered by the sun. From soaring vocals and high powered hooks to sci-fi centric synth riffs and digitized beats, it’s quite hard to peg what exactly their sound is. Whatever [READ ON]
