givers in light 550x540 GIVERS IN LIGHT

The endlessly-sunny brand of indie bayou rock from GIVERS (@giversmusic) was made for the summer months, and In Light is definitely giving me something to smile about. The album opens with single “Up Up Up”, which encapsulates what the group’s music is about. With crunked-out, fuzzy bass [READ ON]

STREAM THE NEW WASHED OUT ALBUM

washedoutpromo wide 550x309 STREAM THE NEW WASHED OUT ALBUM

Ernest Greene, the one man brilliance behind Washed Out (@ernestgreene), has come a long way since his lonely days of bedroom production. Touring with a strong live act (often backed by Brooklyn’s Small Black) and set to release Within and Without on July 12th, I’m pretty excited for what the rest of 2011 will hold for Greene. Though he’s released [READ ON]

Pipsqueak – Evi Antonio

Evi Antonio is basically a guy who makes lo-fi bedroom pop.  While that description is spot on, it certainly doesn’t do enough to capture the quality of his music.  Recommended to me by my girlfriend, Antonio surprised me with the pop-aesthetic on his new album China Man.  He combines a slew of influences [READ ON]

THURSTON MOORE’S DEMOLISHED THOUGHTS

Solo projects from beloved cultural icons are always difficult to review. The musicians generally use the time alone to experiment with new sounds, new directions and new ideas that probably wouldn’t fit into the scope of their own band. Much like super groups, solo projects and side projects can be disappointing to fans who, let’s be honest, don’t really handle change [READ ON]

YAWN RELEASING DEBUT FULL LENGTH ON AUGUST 30

695 days ago by Eric Weiner

GuerrillaGroup 1 YAWNbasement 550x377 YAWN RELEASING DEBUT FULL LENGTH ON AUGUST 30

The sound of Chicago-based YAWN can’t be fully explained in a single word. It’s eclectic, tribal, experimental, and just plain fun to listen to.  After a rough experience with producers leading up to their debut EP, YAWN opted for the ‘get some recording software and go for it’ method, recording the tracks in their basement (download here). This release led to a set at the Fader Fort during SXSW 2010, which immediately caught hold of the audience and produced great reviews (NME, Pitchfork).

YAWN spent last year opening for Yeasayer, Local Natives, Steel Train, Girl Talk, among many others, and now they’re back in the basement finishing up their debut full-length. Open Season hits shelves on August 30th via FeelTrip/Englophile Records.
