The two acts that I saw play Pianos last night didn’t necessarily fit well together, but each owned the stage in their own right. Thankfully, though, the one [READ ON]

We all know that with spring comes new music that we happily greet to wake us from our state of hibernation. Vox and the Hound (@voxandthehound) is perfect for doing just that and so much more. The seasoned quintet have been involved in the New Orleans music scene for quite some time. From their first show at New Orleans’ Foburg Music Festival in spring [READ ON]
Puzzle Pieces – Saint Motel (Free Download)
I first heard of Saint Motel (@saintmotel) in the beginning of 2011. They were described to me as an “awesome band of saints that live in hotel” that had opened up for Ariel Pink’s NYC’s Rock n’ Roll circus show in January. Upon further “Googling”, I realized this “band of saints” was the west [READ ON]

The Head and The Heart
The Head and The Heart seemed to be everywhere down at SXSW. They had five shows as well as a Your Truly acoustic performance at the MTV Hive, after which they packed up and flew to Europe to join The Low Anthem on tour. Having caught [READ ON]

It’s a city turned musical madhouse, an astounding limitless social gathering, an incredible city turned into a new kind of city, with its specific yet diverse demographic and constrained yet amazing lifestyle. It’s performers all being judged by the business-like circus performers in some kind of straightjacket holding all the cards, texting a friend from four feet [READ ON]
Be Alone – Childish Gambino (Free EP Download)
Some people have all the talent. Some people can not only create the iconic “Tracy Jordan” character on 30 Rock straight out of college, they can act on what is arguably the best sitcom on television (Team Community!), produce a killer hip hop EP, and be cool enough to give it away for free. I think I speak for all of us when I say, “Hey Donald Glover (@donaldglover), I love you but fuck you, man! Save some for the rest of us!”
In the larger world, Glover may best be known as a former writer for 30 Rock and the spectacularly hilarious (and super hot) Troy on Community. Here on the blogs, we know him as the word and sound-smith behind the newest Internet sensation. It’s obvious why Glover’s music is garnering attention- it’s amazing. The backing tracks are boisterous and catchy as fuck and Glover spits his rhymes in a way that is sure to make the most seasoned rapper just a little jealous.
Glover brings to his music an intriguing mixture of the swagger required of hip-hop and the cutting words and self-introspection required of a comic. Sure, there is a lot of ego in his words, but there are also lines that cut – that are laugh out loud funny. The raps are that of a true writer, no mistaking that, who is mixing in pop culture references (“I’m gonna be on these tracks like indie girls on Amelie” has to be one of my favorites) and pure, distilled, spitting rhymes.
Childish Gambino is going to be the next big thing, in fact, it already is. It’s nerd hip-hop, music for the intelligencia and just plain old great. The EP is available on Glover’s tumblr, and if you can score yourself some tickets, he is on tour through the spring/summer. I think I speak for all of us when I say, “Donald, we love you, please love us back.”

Yesterday, for the first time since 2009, Death Cab for Cutie released new material. A few things immediately struck me about “You Are A Tourist”. The first was that, despite the band’s declaration that this record to be less guitar-driven, Chris Walla seems to be taking the lead for most of the song. This certainly isn’t a complaint, though. I like the riff that runs throughout [READ ON]
